Bridging the Historical Narrative: From the Middle Passage to Current Community Connections
Bringing together historical research, genealogy, and community action, this presentation explores the history, heritage, and ongoing preservation of Prince George’s County’s African American communities. The Bowie Ancestors Project and the Friends of Historic Mt. Nebo Preservation Corporation (FOHMN-PC), share their experiences connecting generations of an African American community in Prince George’s County from the Transatlantic slave trade to present-day historic preservation and community building efforts.
Part 1: The Transatlantic Slave Trade in Prince George’s County – Janis Hagey (FOHMN-PC) presents her research on the Middle Passage’s impact on Prince George’s County.
Part 2: Tracing Family Lineages – Siobhan Summers and Barnet Pavão-Zuckerman (Bowie Ancestors Project) present genealogical research that is identifying and connecting African American descendant community members with the Project’s repatriation efforts.
Part 3: Preserving African American History and Building Community – Michael Gaddy (FOHMN-PC) shares Greater Mt. Nebo AME Church’s historic preservation initiatives for caring for their heritage while fostering continued community connection.
